Residence Riva: A sleek facade mix for a stylish project
A relaxing, comfortable environment a stone's throw from Hasselt, surrounded by greenery and water: it is no surprise that the new Krikels Park district in Kuringen was an instant hit. The 44 single-family homes on the estate overlook an exceptional residence with fourteen stylish cube-shaped apartments. With its sober, dynamic and luxurious facades, the architecture of Résidence Riva is an unmistakable eye-catcher in the district and on the water. However, this residence has (much) more to offer than you would say at first glance.

Architecture – A palette of sober, natural materials

Residence Riva houses fourteen spacious two- and three-room apartments. The residential units are spread over the three upper floors, while the ground floor is reserved for entrance halls, parking spaces and bicycle storage. Residents have a pleasant private terrace on either side of the building and enjoy a beautiful view of the nearby Albert Canal. “The comfort of a home starts with an attractive location,” explains Veerle Henckaerts of Mamu Architects, who was responsible for the project. “The designer, Immo Top Invest, gave us carte blanche. The parking infrastructure on the ground floor is made of black steel, which makes the building seem to float. By creating attractive views and residential units that give a pleasant impression of space (partly thanks to the large windows, the high ceilings – up to 2.9 metres and even 3.2 metres for the penthouses – and the integration of the exterior design into the architectural concept), we have succeeded in optimally integrating the volume, which is very long, into this green environment.”

Facade system

One of the many aspects that make Residentie Riva so special is the design of the façade, which appeals to all the senses. “To create a link with the houses on the estate, the apartment building was designed to be as transparent as possible, with an optimal division of the façade. The interplay of staggered zones and open and closed façade elements creates the optical illusion of a small building with many visual variations and articulations,” Veerle Henckaerts explains. “We opted for a palette of sober, natural materials. The closed parts of the façade are covered with a stylish arrangement of white and black aluminium cassettes, alternating with large-format sand-coloured ceramic tiles. We had to keep the number of joints to a minimum to give the building a sleek, contemporary look. All joints on the corners of the ceramic façade cladding were mitered for a solid, luxurious look.”

Limeparts-Drooghmans put the ideas of Mamu Architects into practice.

“We produced and installed the aluminium cassettes and large-format ceramic tiles”, says CEO Koen Vandersmissen. “Limeparts and Drooghmans have joined forces to create top-quality architectural facades, with both metal and non-metal cladding. Both variants are used extensively in this project. All facades we install are systematically made to measure, then go through the “engineering phase” and are finally manufactured based on the aesthetic vision of the architect, taking into account technical requirements, thermal performance and general feasibility. Residentie Riva is not only an eye-catcher, but the ventilated facade system also guarantees a pleasant, future-proof home for all its residents.” Koen concludes with satisfaction: “The combination of our project manager, the architect and the contractor has delivered a particularly beautiful result. We are happy that we were able to leave our mark on such a beautiful project! Materials used: aluminium cassettes – large format ceramic tiles
