Hangar 26
On Antwerp’s Eilandje, between the MAS museum and the Scheldt River, stands the iconic building “Hangar 26/27.” Built after World War II, this warehouse features characteristic industrial architecture in both form and materials. The structure is composed of concrete, with solid brick walls. The terrace was given new cladding and an exact replica of the existing balustrade. The old wooden façade cladding was removed and replaced with innovative prefab façade elements made of insulation and hardwood slats, mounted on a supporting structure. By using double slats at roof level, the design references the sawtooth roofs and rhythm of the building, which is now visible from the surrounding area. Lighting and signage were integrated into this slatted structure, making the building recognizable both day and night. This project won the award for Best Renovation Project of 2022. The fire classification was the primary reason for this renovation: B S2 d0! The Limeparts-Drooghmans systems make this possible, even with wood!
